Spree Olive — the canal water through Kreuzberg
A cargo bike will move a one-room flat here faster than a van will find a parking space.
Cargo bikes, vans and gear for people who make things. Below: what is rentable here, when the window opens and closes, and the ground rules worth knowing before you hand over a card.

Basics on the ground
General, and worth verifying
- Driving licence
An EU or EEA licence is accepted as it stands. Licences from outside that area are generally accepted for a limited period after arrival, often alongside a translation or an International Driving Permit, and rental desks apply their own stricter rules on top. Bring the physical card.
- Vans and where you can park them
The rental is the easy part; the parking is not. Most inner districts are permit-controlled, a van will not fit in a standard bay, and a move usually needs a temporary no-stopping zone applied for in advance through the district authority or arranged by a removals firm. Factor in the lead time — it is measured in weeks, not days.
- Boat licence
Germany allows craft below a stated engine power to be taken out without a licence, and the Berlin waterways are one of the main places people use that. Above the threshold you need the relevant certificate. The threshold is set nationally and has changed before, so confirm it for the specific boat.
- Deposits
Cargo bike and van deposits are modest and often held on a card; camera, film and event equipment is where the numbers get serious, and hire houses commonly require proof of insurance rather than a deposit alone. For gear, ask what cover they require and whether your own policy satisfies it.
- The low-emission zone
The inner city is an environmental zone requiring a windscreen sticker. Rental vehicles registered in Germany normally carry one already, but a vehicle brought in from elsewhere may not. Check before you drive into the ring.
- Season and the quarter days
Moving here concentrates around the end of the quarter, and the end of September is the sharpest peak of the year for vans, cargo bikes and lifts. Book those weeks a month or more ahead or accept whatever is left.
Licence categories, age limits and what may be taken out without a certificate change, and operators set stricter terms than the law requires. Treat everything above as orientation and confirm it with the operator and the local authority before you book.
